I like to consider myself a bit of a brunch connoisseur. It is by far the best meal of the day and a great one to eat out. A solid brunch can keep you full until dinner time. Over the years I’ve been to many different cafes and restaurants in Christchurch for brunch and I thought why not share the best of them with you all.
So over the next wee while I will be sharing some of my favourite brunch spots with you, starting with Hello Sunday. Hello Sunday is located at 6a Elgin Street, Sydenham (near The Colombo mall) in a building that used to house a Sunday school. They specialise in brunch and daytime dining with a killer menu, cabinet food and coffee.
At the 2016 Christchurch Hospitality Awards Hello Sunday won Cafe of the Year, the People’s Choice Award and the Supreme Establishment of the Year, and it’s not hard to see why. The interiors are beautiful, service is great and food even better. Hello Sunday also take bookings, which is great for planning ahead and also to guarantee a table at this very popular cafe.
The coffee is excellent and they offer almond milk, which is brilliant for those like myself whose tummy’s don’t agree with dairy milk or soy.
Hello Sunday’s menu is changed seasonally and features modern and interesting takes on brunch classics such as granola, eggs benedict and shakshuka along with different options such as a gluten free Japanese crepe and sweet or savoury crumpets. There are plenty of options for those who require gluten free, vegetarian or vegan food.
I have had brunch at Hello Sunday on a number of occasions and most recently I had the mushroom eggs benedict. I love the addition of seeds and microherbs to the dish but did find that there was not quite enough hollandaise. This is my only critique of this otherwise flawless establishment. I’ve also had the granola before, which served with yoghurt gel, chia seeds, sago, mascarpone foam and fruit textures is a dessert in a glass.
The service at Hello Sunday is just as good as the food. Servers are quick to bring water to the table and ask for any coffee orders. They are also knowledgeable and can easily answer questions about the menu.
The cabinet is full of rustic sweet treats including cakes from Cakes By Anna and salads for a quick bite. Hello Sunday are also accredited with Conscious Consumers for avoiding disposable packaging and diverting organic waste and recyclables from landfill.
The interior atmosphere and back courtyard are gorgeously decorated with an assortment of frames, mirrors and large scale art. I would recommend Hello Sunday in a heartbeat to anyone looking for a delicious Christchurch brunch spot.
