Mary’s Average Adventures: Internet Friends

As I’m currently on a family holiday in Rarotonga, there will be a number of guest posts on my blogs from some of my blogging friends from New Zealand and abroad. Today’s post is by Mary from Mary’s Average Adventures, who was my first ever internet/blogging friend; we have been commenting to each other for nearly two years.

When I first started blogging I knew that I would find blogs that I had similar interests of and people who would lead similar lives as me, but I never thought that those people would be my friends. I thought they would just people whose lives I would read about. Yet as I got more and more into reading blogs, and the more blogs who stumbled upon me, I became friends with some of these people.

Before blogging I was one of “those” people, the type of person who believed that you couldn’t trust people on the internet. I mean, I wouldn’t say that I trust every single person that I encounter, but I would say that there are friends that I’ve met online that are way more trustworthy than people I know in real life. I was wrong about people on the internet.

Since Lauren is being so great and allowing to guest blog for her, maybe I should start there. Lauren commented on my blog over a year ago now, back when she was “Lauren the Nerdable”. Lauren first commented on my blog on January 9, 2014 about how she enjoyed my blog. I’m not sure how she stumbled upon my blog. It was the start of 2014 which means it was the start of my daily blogging challenge. She commented “…it’s awesome to find bloggers that are similar to myself.” While at this point I was about five months into blogging, I had very few comments, I mean not that I have a lot of comments now, but this one really stood out to me. For me, this was my first experience knowing that there was someone outside of the US that had such similar interests to me. She was the first person and probably still is the only person who comments and interacts with me outside of North America. She is also a blogger that I can really identify with.

That’s the great thing about internet friends, you find people who are so similar to you that you would never meet if it wasn’t for the internet. It’s crazy to find people all over the world who have such similar interests. There are people I’ve met online that I love to interact with and talk to because they’re great and they just get me, even though they’ve never actually met me. There’s this weird connection where you just get people and you don’t have to try to be friends, it just works. There are people online that I feel closer to than people in my real life. There are people I talk to on a daily basis, people I’m Facebook friends with, one day I hope to meet a lot of my internet friends because that would be like worlds colliding.

So thanks to one of my first internet friends, Lauren, for letting me take over her blog for the day, I hope you all enjoyed it. I’m so glad I had this opportunity! Make sure you’re following Lauren because her blog is great!

Thank you Mary, you’ve been such an inspiration to me, especially when you blogged every day last year. Hopefully one day our friendship will not just be over the internet!
